CHAIR’S VERBAL UPDATE

Teen Reads

Teen Reads is a new Summer Reading Program, which launched July 8. The program is aimed at youth aged 13-18, ideal for tweens who have outgrown the summer reading club. Teen Advisory Group members and other Ottawa teens contribute blog posts about recently published books they would recommend – tied to a weekly theme. A $20 Chapters gift card will be awarded weekly, at random, to those who comment on the blog posts.

Ottawa Public Library (OPL) at the Children of Eastern Ontario’s (CHEO) Teddy Bears’ Picnic

OPL participates in the annual CHEO Teddy Bears’ Picnic every June. During the event, staff registered 240 children into the TD Summer Reading Club program, and delivered three Storytimes, which were well received. OPL also had giant lawn games on hand. These were such a hit that parents asked if they could borrow them at the Library.

MOTION OPL 20190709/1

The CEO said she met with Ambassdor Bálint Ódor, and First Secretary, Katalin Oroszi, and received a generous donation of beautiful books about Hungarian history, art, architecture, culture, and music. The titles have been sent to Content Services for review and consideration for inclusion in the OPL collection.

On July 6, OPL was pleased to offer the family-friendly event celebrating storytelling, community, and creativity. Tales and Tunes featured indoor and outdoor activities along with main stage entertainment provided by the musical duo Twin Flames, Monkey Rock Music, Ariko, and Juno award-winning Splash ‘N Boots. The CEO recognized the employees who worked extremely hard to make the event memorable. She also thanked the Friends of the Ottawa Public Library Association (FOPLA) for their generous sponsorship of the event, and to the Meridian Theatres @ Centrepointe and CBC Ottawa who partnered with OPL. The CEO also thanked the Mayor, Vice-Chair Fisher, and Trustees Luloff and Slack who attended and played active roles in the event.

Deputy Chief Executive Officer’s Last Meeting

The CEO said this will be Deputy CEO, Monique Désormeaux’s last Board meeting as she retires August 9. With 30 years of dedicated library service, Monique is a true believer in the catalytic force libraries have in our communities. Over the course of her career, Monique has been an integral part of OPL’s modernization initiatives. She indicated that Monique served on multiple transition teams before, and during, the amalgamation process including a large reorganization project, planning out materials delivery and communications and marketing, and designing a new and responsive volunteer operation.
