CHAIR’S VERBAL UPDATE

Canada 150 close out with Chris Hadfield

In December, Chris Hadfield helped to close out OPL’s Canada 150 celebrations with a Marquee Event: Storytelling without Borders.  As part of the event, OPL distributed 150 autographed copies of Colonel Hadfield’s children’s book: The Darkest Dark.  The Chair acknowledged Vice-Chair Bergeron and Trustee Wilkinson who attended the sold out event.

Awesome Authors Youth Writing Contest

The Chair indicated that the Awesome Authors Youth Writing Contest is accepting submissions (until February 19).  The contest is open to youth between the ages of 9 and 17, and sponsored by the Friends of the Ottawa Public Library Association (FOPLA) who publish pot-pourri, an annual anthology of the winning Awesome Authors poems, stories, and comics.

CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER'S REPORT

St-Laurent branch

The CEO indicated that the branch will be closed January 8 to 18, 2018 for implementation of Radio-Frequency Identification technology (RFID).  She stated that this is the last branch to convert to this technology (over 6 years).  The Board will receive information closing out the RFID initiative later this year.

PRESENTATION

 

1.

FRIENDS OF THE OTTAWA PUBLIC LIBRARY ASSOCIATION (FOPLA) – MEMORANDUM OF UNDERSTANDING – SIGNING CEREMONY

 

Chair Tierney made introductory remarks and invited OPL CEO Danielle McDonald, FOPLA President Chantal Cloutier, and FOPLA Treasurer, Brenda Rosenberg to the podium. 

Ms. McDonald expressed her gratitude for the sustained effort between the two parties and recognized the work of Deputy CEO Monique Désormeaux, and Program Manager Philip Robert, who work closely with FOPLA.  She thanked Ms. Cloutier and her colleagues, for their ideas, their goodwill, and the friendships that have made the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) a reality. 

Ms. Cloutier thanked the Chair, the CEO, members of the OPL Board and staff for their ongoing commitment.  She said FOPLA is proud to support OPL in many endeavours as the programming and services that OPL provides to the community is invaluable.  She presented OPL with a cheque of $360,000 for 2017, the largest single donation to-date.

Chair Tierney, the FOPLA President, the FOPLA Treasurer, and the CEO signed the MOU.  The Chair closed by thanking FOPLA for the 2017 donation, and resumed with the meeting.

CANADA 150 PROJECT REPORT

Trustee Higdon thanked staff for the planning and the delivery of the programs and events that took place in 2017.

Chair Tierney recognized the effort that OPL staff and the Ad hoc Committee provided, as well as the City of Ottawa initiatives that were undertaken for Canada’s 150th anniversary.
