CHAIR’S VERBAL UPDATE

 

The Chair announced that June is Aboriginal and Seniors Month.

Greenboro branch 10th anniversary

The Chair acknowledged the 10th anniversary of the branch, indicating that the facility was designed to make people feel at home and it has certainly lived up to that promise over the last 10 years. Trustee Fisher attended the fun-filled day on the Board’s behalf. 

Beaverbrook Branch Event – (LEED) – Silver certification

The Chair mentioned that he and the CEO would be in attendance on Saturday, June 18 for the unveiling of an award from Canada Green Building Council recognizing Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED), Silver certification.  There will be activities around the theme of sustainability including crafts, story time, and a building tour of the award-winning branch, led by Emmanuelle Van Rutten from Moriyama and Teshima Architects.  In addition, a barbeque will be hosted prior to the unveiling hosted by the Canada Green Building Council, who have partnered with OPL for the event.

Alta Vista 40th Anniversary

The Chair indicated that the public is welcome to join the celebrations on Saturday, June 25 with employees and the community in Alta Vista to celebrate the branch’s 40th anniversary.

Ravenswing Outreach with BikeMobile

The Chair mentioned that OPL has introduced a new program for employees called Leading from Any Position Program where participants are encouraged to work on a project that demonstrates leadership.  On May 29, staff launched a BikeMobile outreach services via bicycle at Ravenswing. More than 75 people attended the visit, which was well received and drew much interest.  The Chair was inspired to see the innovation and creativity, and thanked staff for their efforts.  (An image of the event was shown and is held on file with the Chief Executive Officer).

CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER'S VERBAL REPORT

Sunday Regular Hours

The CEO pointed out that June 5 was the last day for Sunday regular hours until the month of September.

Central Library Update

The CEO mentioned that in May the Board approved the Central Library Public Engagement Framework.  On May 16, more than 175 residents took part in two working sessions at Ottawa City Hall, and the broader public was asked to participate in an online questionnaire, both to help shape the criteria for evaluating potential locations for the new Ottawa Central Library.  The Board will be asked to approve the evaluation criteria at the July meeting.

Public Open Houses – spaces and uses

The CEO advised that the public could share their thoughts on the spaces and uses of the future Central Library at two Open House sessions taking place from 4:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. on June 15 at Jean Pigott Place, Ottawa City Hall, and on June 22 at Library and Archives Canada (LAC).  The sessions build on the information receive in 2015 from the blue-sky session and online questionnaire.  The feedback gathered will be used in finalizing the functional building program, which will feed into the design process in 2017.

OTTAWA PUBLIC LIBRARY 2017 BUDGET TIMELINES AND CONSULTATION PROCESS

The Board heard from the following delegation:

Deirdre Foucault, a resident of Centretown, spoke of the importance of public consultations now and in the future.  She thanked the Board and staff for public consultations thus far regarding Central Library and Rosemount branches, and indicated that hearing from the public is very important throughout the budget process as public fundraising will likely be a budget discussion in near future.

 

Vice-Chair Bergeron asked when the Board could expect the capital and operating budget targets.  Monique Désormeaux, Deputy CEO advised that the budget directives would be available publicly in October or sooner.

 

There being no further discussion, the report was received as presented.

3.

PUBLIC LIBRARY ASSSOCIATION (PLA) CONFERENCE - TRUSTEE VERBAL REPORT

 

 

Trustee Begg provided a brief overview of the PLA 2016 Conference that was impeccably organized and almost overwhelming in scale.  The conference featured more than 100 educational sessions as well as a series of plenary “Big Ideas” discussions, and attracted more than 8000 delegates.  Trustee Begg said the quality of the presenters and diversity of sessions made the conference an excellent development opportunity and highly recommended that an OPL Trustee and staff participate at the next conference in March 2018.

 

Chair Tierney said attending conferences is a plus as it is good to hear what other libraries and municipalities are doing.

That the Ottawa Public Library Board approve the creation of an Ad-Hoc Committee composed of Vice-Chair Bergeron and Trustee Fisher to work with staff on the Ottawa Public Library’s programming and activities related to Ottawa 2017 for Canada’s 150th Anniversary.
