CHIEF’S VERBAL REPORT

Chief Bordeleau reported on the following items: School Resource Officers on Bike Patrol, Guns and Gangs, Road Safety Initiatives, M. Tibollo, Minister of Community Safety and Correctional Services, Robbery and Break & Enter Units, Diversity Audit, and Fee Structure for Background Checks.  (A copy of the Chief’s verbal report is available online.)

The following points of clarification were made following the Chief’s verbal report:

·         The funding from the recently received 5-year Public Safety Canada Grant will flow directly to the MERIT program and not to the Ottawa Police Service.

·         The OPS is employing a variety of efforts to change driving behaviours including additional officers on foot and on bicycle. Recently a bike patrol officer laid 18 charges within two hours for distracted driving.

·         The high volume of responses to the background check survey (2900 responses) shows the community is very engaged on this issue and that it is very important to them. The volunteer sector is well-organized.
